Proso Millet

Proso millet is a unique Indian Mint that was domesticated as a crop somewhere around thousands of years ago, in China. This millet is now cultivated in India, the Middle East, Turkey, Russia and the United States. Proso millet is sold as a health food due to lack of gluten and can be incorporated into the diets of people who are wheat intolerant. It comes in various colors, from brownish black through olive brown, orange-red, golden and light cream. This millet is also rich in minerals, dietary fiber, polyphenols, vitamins and proteins.

Proso millet crop being a short duration crop requires relatively less amount of nutrients compared to other cereals. To get a good Proso millet crop, general fertilizer recommendations under irrigated conditions are 40-60 kg nitrogen, 30 kg P205, and 20 kg K2O per hectare. Apply half of the nitrogen and whole amount of phosphorus and potash as a basal dose at the time of seed sowing. The remaining half of nitrogen must be applied at the time of the first irrigation. Under the rainfed condition must be applied at the time of the first irrigation. Under the rainfed condition, the fertilizer dose is reduced to half of the irrigated crop. If organic manure is available, it can be added to the soil about a month before sowing at the rate of 4 to 10 tonnes per hectare.

Diet with 20% proso millet protein was fed for 14 days to the rats subjected to D galactosamine liver injury. The protein diet showed a protective nature by suppressing several enzymes elevated due to D galactosamine activity when compared with the rats fed with 20% casein diet .

When 1% Proso millet extract supplemented diet was fed to obese mice in an experiment, the extract was able to decrease the body weight and total cholesterol levels in the treated mice when compared with obese mice fed with normal diet .
